How to use this sheet

  1. 1. Look. Pick the type of wine, then the colour that is closest. Colour tells you a little about age and style, but do not worry if you are unsure.
  2. 2. Smell. Swirl the glass and sniff. Rate how strong the smell is, then tick what you find. There are no wrong answers.
  3. 3. Taste. Rate sweetness, acidity, tannin, body and finish from 1 to 5. Compare with the last wine you tasted: the scales work best when you use them the same way every time.
  4. 4. Decide. Give it an overall score, note whether you would buy it again and write what you thought. Add the price and where you bought it, so you can find it again.

What the words usually mean

ScaleWhat 1 and 5 mean
Sweetness1 is bone dry, 5 is as sweet as dessert wine
Acidity1 is soft and round, 5 makes your mouth water strongly
Tannin1 is none (most whites), 5 is very drying and grippy
Body1 feels light, like skimmed milk, 5 feels full and weighty, like cream
Finish1 fades in a few seconds, 5 lingers for half a minute or more

Use the scales the same way each time, and your notes become comparable.

Questions

What should I write in a wine tasting note?

Write what you can see, smell and taste, and what you think of it. The structure on this sheet (look, smell, taste, decide) keeps your notes comparable from one wine to the next.

Is this the same as a WSET tasting sheet?

No. This is a simpler, general-purpose template. If you want a sheet in the style of a wine-course tasting note, see the white wine and red wine sheets. WineBudd is independent and not affiliated with WSET.

Does it save what I type?

Yes, but only on your own device, in your browser. Nothing is sent to us. Use "Clear sheet" to remove it.

How do I print it?

Use the Print button to print the page you have filled in, or download the blank PDF in A4 or US Letter size and fill it in by hand.
